Weekly Seminars and Presentations by our Staff

To enhance knowledge and awareness of current issues, our staff members meet weekly to discuss various topics and propose solutions to challenges in the public health system.

Below are some of the recent topics discussed, which you may find insightful and informative.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): AMR poses a severe threat to modern medicine, making routine infections difficult to treat. This resistance stems from the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in healthcare, agriculture, and animal husbandry. To combat AMR, nations must enforce antibiotic stewardship, invest in research for new treatments, and promote vaccination. Educating the public on the dangers of self-medication and ensuring hygiene in healthcare settings are crucial. AMR is not just a medical challenge—it’s a global emergency demanding collective action.

Cervical Cancer Screening: Healthcare facilities can either save lives or spread infections if safety protocols are neglected. Proper sanitation, regular disinfection, and waste management ensure patient and staff safety. Training healthcare workers in infection prevention and enforcing the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) can drastically reduce health hazards. Every facility must aim for a culture of vigilance and hygiene.

Fighting Communicable Diseases in Africa: Malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS are leading causes of mortality in Africa. Prevention is possible: insecticide-treated nets and indoor spraying for malaria, Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccines for tuberculosis, and safe practices to prevent HIV transmission. Investing in robust healthcare systems ensures better disease control, while public education campaigns empower communities to stay healthy.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Nigeria: CKD affects 12–15% of Nigerians, fueled by hypertension, diabetes, and late diagnosis. Early prevention—through regular health checks, healthy diets, and avoiding harmful medications—can significantly lower the risk. Affordable healthcare policies and awareness campaigns are pivotal in tackling this silent killer.

Fasting: A Double-Edged Sword: Fasting, practiced for centuries, can promote weight loss, enhance metabolism, and boost mental clarity. Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine,” famously said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food,” emphasizing moderation. While fasting can cleanse the body, excessive or poorly managed fasting risks dehydration, fatigue, and malnutrition. Tailored fasting plans, guided by health professionals, unlock its benefits while avoiding pitfalls.

Health begins with awareness and action—small steps today lead to a healthier tomorrow.
